About OutLawed India
OutLawed India provides people with the knowledge, tools, and assistance required to understand and access law and justice. Regional languages, creative pedagogy, and social intermediaries help shape the work we do.
About Nyaaya Mitra
Nyaaya Mitra – the Paralegal Programme at OutLawed India involves identifying and training individuals from under-served communities, social workers and law students to provide first-point-of-contact legal aid as paralegals.
The legal sector lacks social intermediaries to help people navigate the law on the ground. Getting an FIR registered, visiting a government office, applying for social welfare are all actions that people often have to do by themselves. For those who don’t work in the legal industry, these can be daunting tasks. What the law needs right now is the equivalent of ASHA workers, and at OutLawed India, we believe that paralegals can help bridge that gap.
Through the use of accessible technology, those seeking assistance can easily request the services of paralegals based on a variety of factors like expertise, language, and region. Whether you need assistance with applying for a voter ID or you need support as a victim of crime, paralegals will hand-hold you through the process.
About Internship
We are calling for interns to assist us with this project for the month of November 2023 – including researching and creating modules for training paralegals and engaging with already trained paralegals.
Mode of Internship
This is a hybrid internship, based in Bengaluru, Karnataka. Interns will be required to come to the OutLawed India office at least twice a week. Interns may also be required to be present in person for field visits or other in-person meetings relevant to the project. Apart from that, interns can choose to work from home.
Responsibilities
As an intern your responsibilities will include:
- Research on various relevant and practical aspects of the law (including criminal law, rights of women & children, labour law, legal aid, etc);
- Creation of training modules for paralegals by breaking down legal information into simple actionable steps and brainstorming creative ways to deliver this information;
- Creation of handouts, brochures, pamphlets, etc for the training and the programme;
- Assisting in training of paralegals during the training sessions;
- Field work – stepping into the communities we work with, conducting legal awareness sessions there, and assisting our nyaaya mitras as they help their community members with legal issues.
Requirements
The internship is open to students in India, enrolled in a recognized undergraduate or post-graduate programme in the law who have strong research and writing skills. We will be preferring applicants who are proficient in spoken Kannada.
